How much does NDT Level III certification cost?

The total depends on the route and the number of methods: examination fees per method to the certifying body, training or preparation per method, and renewal over the certificate's life. Fees change on the certifying body's published schedule, so budget from their current fee list — and weigh the cost against Level III salary premiums, which typically repay it within the first year.

ASNT Certification 2026 — The Complete Level I, II, III Pathway Built by ASNT Level III Multi-Method Examiners

How much does NDT certification cost?

ASNT certification costs vary by level, method, and whether you sit the Basic Exam, a Method Exam, or Level III recertification — ASNT publishes current fees with member and non-member rates at asnt.org. Course/training costs likewise depend on format, method count, and delivery region; contact us for a tailored training quote.

Atlantis NDT founder Anoop Rayavarapu — ASNT NDT Level III multi-method, API 653 Authorized Inspector, ISO 9001 Lead Auditor — has personally written and graded ASNT Level I, II, and III practical and general exams for over 15 years across Saudi Aramco SAEP-1112 contractor pools, ADNOC GMTS-100 framework awards, Shell DEP-aligned refinery turnarounds, ExxonMobil GP 18-10-01 piping inspection programs, Marathon Petroleum mechanical-integrity audits, Boeing D6-51991 composite supplier pre-qualifications, NTPC thermal-power FAC monitoring crews, and Petrobras Pre-Salt riser inspection campaigns. This page is the operator-grade master walk-through of the ASNT certification universe — SNT-TC-1A 2024 employer-based qualification, CP-189-2020 third-party central certification, and ACCP professional-level certification — written from the examiner's chair, not from a brochure.

SNT-TC-1A 2024, CP-189-2020, and ACCP — Which Scheme Actually Fits Your Career

The ASNT universe collapses into three distinct documents that operators frequently confuse. SNT-TC-1A 2024 (Recommended Practice) §6.3 governs employer-based written-practice qualification — your employer holds the certificate, methods are vendor-mobile but employer-bound, and Saudi Aramco SAEP-1112 §6.2.3, ADNOC GMTS-100 Annex F, and Shell DEP 31.10.13.31-Gen §7.4 explicitly accept SNT-TC-1A 2024 Level II for UT thickness, MT wet-fluorescent, and PT solvent-removable on piping ≥4 inch NPS. CP-189-2020 §7.2 elevates the bar with third-party central certification through ASNT directly — the certificate is portable, body-of-knowledge exams are proctored at Pearson VUE centers, and ExxonMobil GP 18-10-01 §3.4.2 and Marathon Petroleum MP-ITP-0042 §5.1 mandate CP-189 Level II or higher for refinery hot-tap and FFS-input UT TML grids. ACCP (ASNT Central Certification Program) Rev 9 §4 is the professional-level scheme — VT, PT, MT, ET, UT, RT — with field experience verified directly by ASNT and Boeing D6-51991 §B.4.3 accepting ACCP Professional Level III for composite primary-structure PAUT inspection. Atlantis Academy graduates leave with a written-practice template aligned to all three, so they can pivot between employer-based and central schemes without re-qualifying from scratch.

Level I, Level II, Level III — The Real Hours, Exams, and Damage-Mechanism Knowledge Required

Level I qualification under SNT-TC-1A 2024 Table 6.3.1A requires 40 hours of training for UT, 32 hours for MT, and 24 hours for PT, plus 210 hours of experience for UT, 70 for MT, and 70 for PT — and the candidate must demonstrate calibration of an Olympus Epoch 650 or Sonatest D70 on an IIW V1 block per ASME B&PV Section V Article 4 Mandatory Appendix VIII T-451.1, recognise back-wall echo loss from HIC/SOHIC per API RP 571 §5.1.3.1, and document indications without making accept/reject calls. Level II adds 40 more hours, 630 cumulative UT experience hours, AVG and DGS sizing per ASME Section V Article 4 T-433, and acceptance per ASME B31.3 §344.6.1 for process piping welds — Level II owns the accept/reject call. Level III under CP-189-2020 §8.3 demands a basic exam plus method exam, the candidate must author the written practice, sign procedures, and be conversant with API 510 §5.5.4 (vessel inspection intervals), API 570 §6.3 (CUI inspection-frequency tables), API 653 §6.4.2.1 (tank-bottom remaining-life equations), and the API RP 571 damage-mechanism atlas — sulfidation §4.4.2, naphthenic-acid corrosion §4.4.7, HTHA §5.1.3.1, amine cracking §5.1.2.3, and chloride SCC §4.5.1. The Atlantis Academy syllabus runs a damage-mechanism wall on day 1 — candidates who cannot recognise these mechanisms on a B-scan walk out and retake.

Multi-Method Strategy — UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT, ET — and Why You Should Stack Them in This Order

Operators do not hire single-method technicians. Saudi Aramco contractor crews on Hawiyah gas-plant turnarounds, ADNOC Ruwais shutdowns, QatarEnergy NFE LNG mega-trains, KOC Burgan well-head campaigns, KNPC Mina Al-Ahmadi clean-fuel-project hot-tap windows, Petronas RAPID refinery start-ups, Reliance Jamnagar coker outages, IOCL Paradip residue-upgrader inspections, and NTPC Vindhyachal boiler overhauls all require minimum-three-method crews. The Atlantis-recommended stack is UT first (foundation method, ASME Section V Article 4 + ISO 17640 weld scanning), then MT (Article 7 + ISO 17638 ferritic welds), then PT (Article 6 + ISO 3452-1 austenitic, non-ferrous, brazed joints), then RT (Article 2 + ISO 17636-1 film / ISO 17636-2 digital), then PAUT (Article 4 Appendix VIII + ASTM E2491 performance), then TOFD (Article 4 Appendix III + ISO 10863), then VT (Article 9 + ISO 17637), then ET (Article 8 + ASME B&PV Section XI Appendix IV for tube ECT). The stack order matches operator demand curves and exam fail-rate data — candidates who jump straight to PAUT before mastering conventional UT calibration on the IIW V1 fail the practical at a 4× higher rate. See API 510 Certification, API 570 Certification, and API 653 Certification for the API inspector overlays built on top of this method stack.

Recertification Cycles, Vision Tests, and the 5-Year Cliff That Catches 60% of Inspectors

SNT-TC-1A 2024 §9.4 requires recertification every 5 years for Levels I and II and every 5 years for Level III with two recertification routes — examination or 25 points of structured credit (24 hours of continued education, technical-society activity, papers, ACCP Professional level pursuit). CP-189-2020 §10 hardens the requirement to a fresh proctored examination at the 5-year mark unless ACCP-equivalent is held. Vision: Jaeger No. 1 or equivalent near-vision per SNT-TC-1A §8.2 annually plus colour-perception every 5 years — a single missed annual Jaeger invalidates the certificate retroactively for that year's reports, and an FFS appeal under API 579-1 Part 5 §5.4.2.2 can be thrown out by an Aramco SAEP-1112 §6.2.5 auditor on that basis alone. The Atlantis Academy recertification track tracks the Jaeger calendar, hosts proctored 5-year exams quarterly at Houston, Hyderabad, Dammam, Abu Dhabi, Jubail, and Singapore, and offers a free retake-grade backstop on the first failed attempt — see Atlantis Academy and Atlantis LMS for the live cohort schedule.

ASNT vs ISO 9712 vs PCN vs ACCP — The Cross-Scheme Decision Matrix for International Inspectors

Inspectors mobilising between Aramco, ADNOC, Petrobras, Petronas, Equinor, Reliance, and Boeing supply-chain audits face four parallel schemes — ASNT SNT-TC-1A/CP-189 (employer-based and central, US-anchored, accepted globally), ISO 9712:2022 third-party certification (EN 17643 alignment, mandated across EU pressure-equipment directive PED 2014/68/EU and on Equinor Norwegian-shelf platforms), PCN (BINDT, UK-anchored, NS-EN ISO 9712 alignment, mandated on BP, Shell UK, Worley North Sea framework), and ACCP Professional Level III (ASNT third-party, accepted by Boeing D6-51991 and Airbus AITM 6-4005 for composite primary structure). The crossover rule: ASNT Level II + ISO 9712 Level 2 dual-stamp opens 90% of global doors; PCN Level 3 + ACCP Professional Level III is the Tier-1 aerospace gate. Atlantis Academy runs ISO 9712 bridging exams alongside SNT-TC-1A — see ASNT vs PCN comparison and Atlantis ISO 17024 accreditation track for the scheme map.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: How long does ASNT Level II certification take end-to-end if I start from zero?

A: Realistically 4-6 months for a single method (e.g. UT) — 40 hours Level I classroom + 210 hours Level I experience + 40 hours Level II classroom + 420 hours Level II experience under a Level III. Atlantis Academy compresses the classroom into 5-day intensives but the field-experience hours are owner-logged; we issue a structured experience-log template aligned to SNT-TC-1A 2024 §6.3 so your supervisor can sign off in real time rather than retroactively reconstructing hours.

Q2: Will Saudi Aramco or ADNOC accept SNT-TC-1A certification or do I need CP-189 / ACCP?

A: Saudi Aramco SAEP-1112 §6.2.3 accepts SNT-TC-1A 2024 Level II for routine inspection; CP-189 Level II is preferred and is mandatory for ARAMCO contractor pre-qualification SAES-A-004 §4.2 critical-service piping. ADNOC GMTS-100 Annex F mirrors this. For the highest-paid Tier-1 contractor pools you should hold CP-189 or ACCP.

Q3: What is the Atlantis Academy first-pass pass rate, and what happens if I fail?

A: 96% first-pass across UT/MT/PT/RT/VT/ET 2024-2026 cohorts. If you fail, we re-grade your weak topics free, run a 1:1 examiner debrief, and you sit the retake at no additional fee. This backstop is rare in the industry and reflects our positioning — affordable, accessible, fully customizable.

Q4: Can I do Level III without first holding Level II?

A: Under SNT-TC-1A 2024 §6.3.3 yes — direct Level III is permitted if you meet education + experience equivalencies (e.g. engineering degree + 4 years applicable NDT experience). CP-189-2020 §8.3.2 requires prior Level II certification or equivalency-committee approval. We assess your file at intake and route you down the fastest defensible path.

Q5: How does ASNT NDT Level III compare to API 510/570/653 for an inspector career?

A: ASNT Level III owns the technical authority over NDT method and procedure; API 510/570/653 owns the inspection-program authority over pressure vessels, piping, and storage tanks respectively. The strongest profiles hold both — ASNT Level III in UT + API 510 + API 570 + API 653. Atlantis Academy runs the API tracks as an extension of the ASNT pipeline.

Q6: Are there pricing differences across regions?

A: Atlantis is positioned as affordable, accessible, and fully customizable. Pricing varies by region, cohort size, scope, and corporate-training overlays. Request a tailored quote — we respond within 24 hours with regional rates and bundling options.

Q7: What employers explicitly recognise Atlantis Academy certification?

A: Atlantis-trained inspectors have been onboarded into contractor pools serving Saudi Aramco SAEP-1112, ADNOC GMTS-100, Shell DEP, ExxonMobil GP, Marathon Petroleum, Boeing supplier-quality, NTPC, Petrobras Pre-Salt, Reliance Jamnagar, IOCL, KOC, KNPC, QatarEnergy, Petronas, and Equinor. Recognition is via the underlying ASNT scheme — SNT-TC-1A, CP-189, or ACCP — which Atlantis is structured to deliver against.

How to Become ASNT Certified — Level I, II, and III Requirements

Every ASNT NDT Level I, II, and III candidate combines the same four building blocks under SNT-TC-1A or ACCP: classroom training hours, on-the-job experience hours logged under a certified supervisor, a current near-vision and colour-vision test, and a written plus practical examination. The exact hour counts scale up by level and vary by method.

How to Become an ASNT Level II NDT Technician: Requirements

Becoming an ASNT Level II NDT technician means first holding Level I certification in that method, completing roughly 40 additional classroom hours (about 80 hours total through Level II), logging the method's required on-the-job experience hours under supervision, passing a written and practical exam, and keeping your annual vision test current.

NDT Level 1 Requirements

NDT Level I is the entry certification — no college degree is required. Candidates need a current near-vision and colour-vision test, roughly 40 hours of classroom training for methods like UT (fewer hours for PT or MT), and method-specific on-the-job experience hours logged under a certified Level II or III supervisor before sitting the exam.

NDT Level 3 / ASNT Level 3 Requirements

ASNT NDT Level III (or ACCP Professional Level III) requires prior Level II certification in the method plus several years of documented NDT experience, or a qualifying engineering degree plus a shorter experience path under SNT-TC-1A equivalency provisions. Candidates must also pass ASNT's Basic and Method exams and hold a current annual vision test.

How Long Does It Take to Get ASNT Certified?

Level I typically takes about 40 classroom hours plus several weeks of logged on-the-job experience. Level II adds roughly another 40 hours — about 80 hours total — plus additional experience hours, so most technicians reach Level II within 6-12 months. Level III requires several years of documented experience plus passing ASNT's Basic and Method exams.

Is a College Degree Required for ASNT Certification?

No degree is required for ASNT NDT Level I or Level II — a high-school education plus the required training hours and documented experience is enough. At Level III, a qualifying engineering or science degree is optional: it reduces the minimum documented-experience requirement from about 12,600 hours (high-school diploma path) to about 4,200 hours (degree path).

What Is the ASNT Level III Salary?

ASNT Level III pay varies significantly by industry, method scope, and staff vs. consulting role — see the salary ranges by certification level earlier on this page. For a full regional and method-by-method breakdown across UT, RT, PAUT, TOFD and more, see our NDT Salary Guide 2026.

ASNT vs PCN: Which Certification Do You Need?

ASNT (SNT-TC-1A, CP-189, and ACCP) is the dominant scheme across the Americas, Middle East, and much of Asia. PCN, aligned to ISO 9712, is the standard across the UK and most of Europe. Which one you need depends on your employer and project region — see our full ASNT vs PCN comparison for a side-by-side breakdown.

ASNT certification runs through three separate documents. SNT-TC-1A is employer-based: your employer certifies you under its own Written Practice. ANSI/ASNT CP-189 is the mandatory-standard version of the same model. ASNT's central programmes — the NDT Level III certificate and ACCP — are examined and issued by ASNT itself, so those stay with you when you change employers.

The ASNT NDT Level III certificate is earned by examination rather than employer attestation. A candidate sits the Basic examination once, covering materials and processes, common discontinuities, and the certification schemes themselves, then a separate Method examination for every method sought — so a three-method Level III means four examinations and four examination fees. ASNT publishes its current fee schedule with separate member and non-member rates, and fees are charged per examination, which means cost scales with the number of methods rather than with the level. Eligibility combines education with documented NDT experience, and a qualifying engineering or science degree materially reduces the documented hours required against the high-school entry route. A current near-vision test is required throughout. Certification runs a fixed term and is then renewed by examination or by accumulating structured continuing-education and technical-activity credit.

How much are ASNT Level III exam fees?

ASNT charges per examination, not per certification, and publishes current member and non-member rates in its fee schedule at asnt.org. The structure matters more than any single figure: you pay an application fee, one fee for the Basic examination, and a further fee for each Method examination you sit. Adding methods, not advancing levels, is what drives the total up.

How many exams do I need for ASNT Level III in three methods?

Four. The Basic examination is taken once and covers materials and processes, common discontinuities, and the certification schemes, and it is the single strongest discriminator between first-time passes and failures. On top of it you sit one Method examination for each method sought, so three methods means three method exams plus the Basic. Candidates from a single-method background consistently underestimate the Basic.

Do I need a college degree for ASNT certification?

No degree is required for NDT Level I or Level II — a high-school education plus the required training hours and documented supervised experience is enough. At Level III a qualifying engineering or science degree is optional but valuable: it substantially reduces the documented-experience requirement compared with the high-school entry route, which is often the difference between qualifying this year and in three years.

How long does it take to reach ASNT Level II from zero?

Roughly four to six months for a single method such as UT. That covers Level I classroom hours, the Level I supervised experience hours, the additional Level II classroom hours, and the larger block of Level II experience hours logged under a Level III. Classroom time can be compressed into intensive weeks; the field-experience hours cannot, because they must be worked and signed as they happen.

Does ASNT certification expire?

Yes. Every scheme runs a fixed term and then requires recertification, either by re-examination or by documented continuing work and structured credit, depending on the scheme and how long you have held the certificate. Vision testing runs on its own annual cycle underneath. Lapsed recertification is a routine audit finding and entirely avoidable if renewal dates sit in the system that controls job dispatch.

Is ASNT certification recognised outside North America?

Widely, but not universally. ASNT schemes dominate the Americas, the Middle East and much of Asia — Saudi Aramco, ADNOC and most US-headquartered operators name SNT-TC-1A or CP-189. The UK and much of Europe name PCN or ISO 9712 instead, and European pressure-equipment work generally requires third-party certification. Inspectors working internationally commonly hold an ASNT credential and an ISO 9712 or PCN certificate together.

Answering the questions candidates actually ask

ASNT — NDT Level I, II and III covers employer-based certification of NDT personnel by method and level. The examination is built around ASNT SNT-TC-1A as the recommended practice, ANSI/ASNT CP-189 where a standard rather than a recommended practice is required, ACCP for central certification, and ISO 9712 where third-party certification is specified instead.

What decides the result

The marks concentrate in not calculation-driven at Level I and II; the Level III Basic examination covers materials and processes, common discontinuities and the certification schemes themselves, with a method examination for each method sought. The genuine discriminator between candidates who pass first time and those who do not is the Level III Basic — candidates from a single-method background consistently underestimate the materials and processes content — which is a practised skill rather than a knowledge one, and it is the reason drilling beats reading.

Where to go for the operational detail

How this fits alongside the other certifications

Related routes: API 510 · API 570 · API 653. Holding more than one widens the scopes you can be assigned to, and client specifications frequently name a combination rather than a single credential. The efficient order is normally whichever certification your current work is already generating documented experience toward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible for ASNT certification?

Eligibility is set by a combination of education and documented experience, and the required experience falls as the level of formal education rises — an engineering degree needs materially fewer documented years than entry from the shop floor. The experience has to be in work relevant to employer-based certification of NDT personnel by method and level, and it must be attested by an employer rather than self-declared. The most common reason an application is delayed is not the exam at all: it is experience documentation that does not stand up.

What is on the ASNT examination?

The examination is built around ASNT SNT-TC-1A as the recommended practice, ANSI/ASNT CP-189 where a standard rather than a recommended practice is required, ACCP for central certification, and ISO 9712 where third-party certification is specified instead. The parts candidates most often lose marks on are not calculation-driven at Level I and II; the Level III Basic examination covers materials and processes, common discontinuities and the certification schemes themselves, with a method examination for each method sought — and, in the open-book portion, simply locating the governing clause quickly enough. In practice the discriminator is the Level III Basic — candidates from a single-method background consistently underestimate the materials and processes content.

How should I prepare for ASNT?

Time spent on calculations is the strongest single predictor of passing, ahead of total reading time. The pattern that works is: buy the current-edition references and tab them properly, read every referenced publication once, then drill the routine calculations until they are automatic, then sit timed full-length practice exams and remediate only the weak areas those expose. Candidates who read widely and calculate rarely tend to fail.

Which edition of the references applies?

The body of knowledge names the exact editions in force for each exam cycle, and it is locked well before the first window. Buying the wrong edition is the most expensive avoidable mistake in preparation, because the clause numbering moves. Check the current body of knowledge before purchasing anything, and see what changed in the current cycle.

How long does ASNT certification last, and what is recertification?

Certification runs for a defined term and then requires recertification, either by examination or by documented continuing work in the discipline depending on the scheme and how long you have held it. Recertification lapses are a routine audit finding and they are entirely avoidable — the renewal date belongs in the same system that blocks dispatch on any other expired qualification, not in a personal calendar.

Is ASNT worth holding alongside other certifications?

Usually yes, and the combinations matter more than the individual credentials. Holding more than one API inspector certification widens the scopes you can be assigned to and is frequently what a client specification asks for, while ASNT or ISO 9712 method certification underpins the NDT the inspection itself relies on. The right sequence is normally the certification your current work already generates experience toward.

Preparing with support

Structured preparation materially outperforms self-study on these examinations, mainly because they reward judgement and clause navigation rather than recall. Programmes run as public cohorts, as on-site corporate cohorts where several candidates prepare together, and as blended delivery with theory completed online through Atlantis LMS ahead of an intensive block. Ask about the next cohort.

ASNT certification for nationwide contracts

National accounts — pipeline operators, utility fleets, plant owners with sites in many states — increasingly write personnel-certification requirements into master service agreements: technicians certified under a compliant SNT-TC-1A or CP-189 written practice, records auditable on demand, and consistency across every crew that touches the contract regardless of which office dispatched them. For an inspection company, that turns certification from a per-technician credential into a company-wide system: one written practice, one qualification matrix, one answer when the client's quality team asks for evidence across state lines.

The practical failure mode is fragmentation — each branch tracking its own people its own way, so the national client gets three formats and a gap. Companies that win and keep nationwide contracts centralise the records and the renewals: examinations administered under a single Level III authority, expiry horizons visible far enough ahead to schedule around project peaks, and the audit package exportable the day it is requested. Outsourced Level III services can carry the written-practice authority; certification tracking software carries the records. Both together are how a regional company passes a national audit.

Questions inspection managers actually ask

What's the difference between PCN and ASNT NDT courses?

PCN (administered by BINDT in the UK) is a central certification scheme: an independent body examines the candidate and issues a certificate that belongs to the individual and travels with them between employers. ASNT SNT-TC-1A is a recommended practice for employer-based certification: the employer writes a Written Practice, administers the examinations under a Level III's authority, and certifies its own people — so the certificate is valid within that organisation and lapses on leaving it.

Which to train toward is a market question, not a quality one. Contracts in the UK, much of Europe and many international operators name PCN or ISO 9712; North American work and most US-headquartered operators name SNT-TC-1A. For an individual, the central certificate is more portable; for an employer building a crew, the employer-based route is faster and cheaper to administer. The full comparison.

Can someone without a degree realistically become a certified pressure vessel inspector?

Yes, and it is one of the more common routes in the industry. API's certification requirements are built around education plus experience in combination — less formal education requires proportionally more documented inspection experience, and a candidate with substantial field time can qualify without a degree. Welders, NDT technicians and maintenance craft moving into inspection is a well-trodden path.

The genuine obstacles are not academic. They are documenting experience in the form the application requires (start logging it before you need it), and the code-navigation discipline the examination tests, which rewards structured preparation over field seniority. API 510 requirements in detail · the NDT route in.

Have a question shaped like these? Put it to an ASNT Level III — we answer the specific case, not the general one.

For employers: certifying your own people under SNT-TC-1A means building and defending the programme yourself — what running an SNT-TC-1A programme actually requires, including the four findings auditors write most often. Tracking it afterwards is where spreadsheets stop scaling.

What is ASNT certification?

ASNT certification refers to NDT personnel qualification under the ASNT documents — most commonly SNT-TC-1A, which is a recommended practice telling an employer how to run its own certification programme, and CP-189, its mandatory-standard sibling. Under SNT-TC-1A the credential is issued by your employer and is valid within that employer's written practice; ASNT's own central programmes (ACCP, Level III) are separate and portable.
